Picks of Week 3/22/09

Movie of the Week: Collateral, Directed by Michael Mann
Let me start by saying I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan. In fact, I would go so far as to say I do not like him. However, Collateral is one movie that I can make a huge exception for. For one, Tom Cruise’s character is actually believable, and for another I do like Jamie Foxx. With some abstract and colorful shots, Michael Mann films a brilliant Crime/Thriller.

Song of the Week: After Hours, By We are Scientists
I discovered this band on myspace and this was one of the first songs on their playlist. The repetative but catchy lyrics keep me listening again and again. My favourite song by We are Scientists.

Video Game of the Week: Halo 3, Xbox 360
One of my friends is absolutely obsessed with this game and plays it with me whenever we get together. After having him humiliate me every time we played, I finally managed to beat him five times in a row and have since then come to appreciate the game. Halo 3 has fantastic graphics and some of the best online on the console. The only downside to this game is the campaign is stretched out and repetitive. Still, Bungie has cranked out a game that will be remembered for a long, long time.

I don’t like bacon anymore

Today in school we started the infamous “pig dissection.” Honestly it one of the most disgusting things I have ever done in my life. Once you get past the breaking of the pigs jaw and legs you can begin the fun stuff like jump roping the with the pig’s small intestine (that was fun). My crazy (liberal as hell) Biology Teacher said that if a person can get the pig’s brain out if its skull intact then we don’t have to do an essay. Needless to say I really want that brain intact!
In other news I am only 10 levels away from prestiging in Call of Duty 4 (if you don’t know what that is it is basically going as high as you can go and then starting over). My brother rented Fallout 3 for the second time and that has been fun.
The plague is going around and everyone I know has been getting sick. I hope to keep evading it as I have a Drumline show this saturday.
Keep the comments coming!
Mary Jane, Gansta, and BOOM!
March 18, 2009
Periodically at my school we have an assembly for various reasons such as: Columbine Shooting, Red Ribbon Week, Black History Month, and so on. A few months ago we had an “enlightening” assembly on marijuana. The assembly consisted of a corny movie and a police officer giving the usual “don’t do drugs” speal. Honestly almost everyone in the auditorium (including myself) could hardly keep from laughing when it showed a guy take some marijuana and then have an exaggerated panic attack that ended up with him falling out of a tree. The most it did was to provide us with some names I had not heard of such as: “Mary Jane”, “Gangsta”, and my personal favorite “BOOM”. However, it did get me thinking about the issue.
As I was listening to my local radio station the other night the host brought up the related issue of cleaning up the streets from marijuana and related crimes. This in itself was not surprising, what surprised me was his take on how the issue should be handled. His solution was to legalize marijuana with restrictions similar to cigarettes. however the more I think about it the more I realize the basic logic behind the move. Honestly people will do it whether or not you legalize it. I know many people that smoke it and get away with it. As I was walking through my hometown I walked by a guy which was smoking something that definitely did not smell like cigarettes. The point is, does making marijuana illegal really gain anything except a guarantee that half the people in grades 6-12 will get in trouble with the law. Cigarettes (one of the leading causes of lung cancer) is proven more addictive then marijuana and it’s legal. Ever heard of D.W.I? Nearly 15,000 people were killed in D.W.I. related accidents in 2007 and alcohol is legal. Is marijuana any worse than these to be made illegal? Honestly if there is even the smallest chance that making marijuana legal would lower the demand or clean up the streets I would take it. After all what are we really sacrificing? After hearing this I went to my peers with the issue and got varied opinions. But, the host did his job in convincing me that marijuana should be legalized with certain necessary restrictions. Please give me your take on this issue and COMMENT!
Picks of week 3/15

In this blog every week I will have my picks of the week. This week I will start it off.
Movie of the Week: Lord of the Rings, Directed by Peter Jackson
After a week of learning the theme to Lord of the Rings on my violin I finally sat down and watched it again. This is definitely top 10 movies of all time. Brilliant acting coupled with Peter Jackson’s amazing interpretations of what the Lord of the Rings is make this a movie worth watching over and over again.

Song of the Week: Slow Show, By The National
Discovered at my sister’s wedding, this song was in my shuffle list a few days ago and has been echoing through my head ever since. The simple but addicting rhythms and the deep, entrancing lyrics sung by Matt Berninger make this song one that can be appreciated over and over again.

Video Game of the Week: Call of Duty 4, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC
When I got my Xbox 360 this past Christmas I new the two games I wanted: Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War 2. Call of Duty 4 achieved the game of the year award for 2007 from numerous magazines and websites. With addictive online, an epic storyline, and some of the best graphics seen on any console, Call of Duty 4 is a game not to be reckoned with. This game is without a doubt the best Call of Duty yet and clearly one of the best First Person Shooters up to date.
